Oregano Oil Is Effective Against Acne
Acne is a type of skin disease which involves the oil glands, and is intensified by bacterial infection. This
word comes from the Greek word ‘akme’ which means “the highest point.” Although it is not dangerous, it can leave
scars on the affected skin if not treated early. The misspelling occurred in 1835.
This skin disease develops when our follicles, or skin pores becomes blocked. Sometimes due to cell over
production, the oil or sebum which usually drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria begin to multiply. This
usually results in whiteheads or blackheads. If the situation worsens, the infected pores becomes inflamed,
pimples develop with puss inside, oftentimes resulting in skin break-outs. As this condition occurs mostly on the
face, the need for control at an early stage is vital.
This skin conditions affects a large group of people. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 85% of
teenagers in the USA have it in varying degrees. It is quite common and does not really require medical
intervention except when the condition is persistent and prevalent.
Oregano Oil for Acne There is a substance that can control all the phases of this skin
problem very effectively because of its excellent antimicrobial properties. Oil of oregano is an antibacterial
agent which also has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. It contains powerful phytochemicals, phenols and
flavonoids that can kill all types of microorganisms, including bacteria. Since acne is typically worsened
by bacterial infection, with the use of oregano oil, this infection can be controlled and stopped.
There are also experiments and studies proving the anti-inflammatory properties of this oil. In fact, it can be
used to relieve the inflammation and joint pains of arthritic patients. Skin inflammation caused by acne can thus
be controlled by the same mechanism.
Advantage of Oil of Oregano Over
Antibiotics
The usual treatment for acne involves the use of specially formulated facial creams and antibiotics. In severe
cases, laser surgery or similar procedure is resorted to. All pharmaceutical remedies have certain side effects
because they are made of synthesized chemicals. With oregano oil, there is no concern about adverse side effects
because it is made from 100% organic substances.
This essential oil is extracted from the crushed leaves of the wild oregano plant, Origanum vulgare. There are
no chemical pesticides or fertilizers used in growing the plant or processing the oil, thus ensuring that all
of the substances contained in the oil are purely organic.
With this natural quality, it can kill bacteria and other pathogens without leaving any side effects. That
cannot be said with synthetically produced drugs and antibiotics. Somehow, there will always be some kind of side
effects when they are used.
But since this oil contains potent substances, you have to administer it in proper dosages. Applying it in
excessive amounts will produce tingling and burning sensations on the skin, especially in sensitive areas such
as the mucous membranes and the genitalia. If excess amounts are taken internally, you can suffer stomach
problems. All these side effects can be avoided by taking the oil in proper doses and diluting the
concentrated oil before it is applied topically. Whatever the side effects you may experience, it will
gradually dissipate in a few minutes.
How to Use Oregano Oil for Acne
There are two ways by which this essential oil can control acne: by using it topically and by taking it
internally.
You need to apply the oil directly to the affected skin area. This will relieve itchiness and control the
bacterial infection. It will also suppress the inflammation of the affected skin. But before you apply the oil, it
is very important to first dilute the concentrated oil with virgin olive oil to make it easier for your skin to
adjust. The usual dilution is 1 part of oregano oil to 4 – 5 parts of olive oil.
If you take this oil internally, your skin condition will improve more quickly. The antibacterial properties of
the oil will target the harmful bacteria and other toxic elements inside your stomach and stimulate your digestive
juices. It will result in better digestion which usually brings about a clearer complexion.
In addition, eating a healthy diet, observing personal hygiene and engaging in reasonable physical exercise will
assure that your skin will be free from acne. An added benefit you can get from oil of oregano is the strengthening
of your immune system. Taking about 2 – 3 drops per day will help with this.
